Vinton Construction Company receives 2017
As reported in the Herald Times Reporter, February 2nd, 2018
Manitowoc's Vinton Construction Company has been awarded the 2017 Outstanding Highway Construction Award for Concrete Projects by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
The award was presented at the Contractor-Engineer Conference in Madison. Of the five projects nominated, Vinton Construction Company received the award for excellence in concrete paving for the Lincoln Avenue project in Two Rivers. The 0.82-mile section of Lincoln Avenue was completely reconstructed at a cost of approximately $5 million. The project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule, despite the addition of proximately $500,000 worth of work.
The roadway involved two travel lanes, bike lanes and parking accommodations at various locations along the corridor, plus sanitary sewer and water mains, including private facilities that were found to be defective during construction. New sidewalks were constructed throughout, and an off-road, multi-use trail was constructed on the north end of the project, which will in the future extend to Two Rivers High School. More than 100 trees were planted within the right of way. Several challenges impacted Vinton’s method of construction, the company said in a press release. Local access was required at all times into driveways. Vinton said it was mindful of impacts to property owners and noted "their good communication allowed residents to prepare for inconveniences and limit impacts."
Maintaining cross traffic using pavement gaps was required at several locations, but Vinton proposed paving through these areas with high-early strength concrete to decrease the cure time and stage the work so multiple areas were not affected at the same time. The proposal reduced impacts and improved the ride quality. A detour was in place during construction, but most residents utilized local roads for a shorter route. Vinton created a temporary bypass of the 35th Place intersection, allowing it to remain open for local use. They also needed to maintain pedestrian access on at least one side, which they accomplished by pouring all 22 feet of the mainline as one pour, then using a zero-clearance paver for pike lanes, parking lanes and turn lanes.

Vinton Construction Company receives 2009 WisDOT
Excellence in Concrete Paving Award
Vinton Construction Company was named the outstanding concrete pavement award winner for 2009 by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The award was presented at the annual WisDOT Engineer - Contractor's Conference in Madison and was for work performed on the Northeast Region's State Trunk Highway 114 Project in Winnebago County, 3rd Street, Menasha.
According to the WisDOT, "This 2.2 million dollar project provided for a complete reconstruction of the roadway and incorporated several elements of community sensitive design to enhance the inner city neighborhood of Menasha.
Vinton used two pavers to place the mainline pavement. This continuous paving accommodated the multiple lane width changes that were required along the project. Vinton scheduled concrete paving operations to eliminate conflicts with scheduled deliveries to businesses and also incorporated use of high early strength concrete at major intersections to minimize impacts to business access.
The contractor used an on-site crushing operation to produce aggregate dense material for the project. The mobile crushing operation traveled along the project and crushed the existing material as it progressed. The resultant material met the contract requirements and was produced and placed in a timely manner with minimal impact on the adjacent residents and businesses.
This project is an example of the exceptional results that can be achieved with a quality workforce and attention to detail. This project will reduce traffic congestion and thus promote safety, tourism and business development in this area for many years in the future.
Accepting the award for Vinton Construction Company were Rich Lamers, Paving Superintendent and Jim Lamers, Area Supervisor on the job.
